CFSB Board Meeting Minutes April 13 2020

CFSB Board meeting April 13th, 2020

Held virtually using Zoom.

In attendance: Chris Voss, Michael Harrington, Gary Burke, Mike McCorkle, Mike Nelson, Bernard Friedman,  Ben Hyman, John Colgate, Kim Selkoe

Primary Goals: Accept the grant awarded by Santa Barbara Foundation to buy fish from fishermen and donate it to the Foodbank and other soup kitchens.  Generate ideas for how to implement the program.

This Grant for $20,000 must be spent within 1 calendar year. Foodbank staff indicated their greatest need will come in the summer.

Meeting was opened by Chris Voss.

Meeting began with discussion of ideas.

How to get the fish processed?

·       Figure out what the processors are willing to do

·        Ask Fish Market, Wild Local, Harbor Meat and Seafood and Get Hooked to indicate their interest, constraints, and prices.

How to determine which fishermen to buy from?

·       Based on whether they need a market

·       SB fishermen only, member of CFSB

·       Best if partially employed or unemployed –

o   Ask last time they went fishing

·       What price do you expect to get?

o   Aim to make it worth their while fishing, but not top dollar so we can buy as much fish as possible.

Purchase a few large loads or a lot of small loads?

·       Large loads require a lot of logistics with respect to: fish totes, vehicle, cold storage, freezing capacity, long work hours.

·       Pick up the left over fish at the end of the Saturday Market and accumulate as small loads.

Vote:

Harrington made a motion to accept grant monies to buy fish from fishermen and donate it to the food bank. Mike McCorkle seconded it.
Unanimous approval.

Kim can execute the agreement.

Next steps:

1.     Work out the plan of what the fisherman will be paid, what the processor will be paid before the fishing trip. Let the processor pick up the fish and process it, drop it to Foodbank. Only pay the processor when we get the receipt from the Foodbank confirming the correct amount of fish was delivered, and get copies of landing receipts and checks.

2.     Work out our overhead expense to manage the grant and program.

3.     We will put together draft questionnaires for both processors and fishermen, circulate to board, and begin soliciting fishermen and processors to fill in the applications.

New Topic: Cable Committee award us $10K for solar power refrigeration.

Take a reefer trailer and park in the Yacht Club?

We have a year to spend the money, and things are so uncertain, maybe best to hold off.

Motion by Chris and seconded by Harrington to table the discussion of how to spend the Cable money.
